You're a Mad Man, Charlie Brown

Lucy is at a table with her book "Jar of Nickels" doing an author book signing.  Charlie enters nervously.  She gets upset when she sees him and goes to him and speaks quietly, almost a whisper.

LUCY

What are you doing here?

CHARLIE

Worried? Loony in the bookstore! Somebody call the hospital. Loony in the bookstore!

Lucy hushes him and looks around to make sure no one is staring.

LUCY

Shh... calm down.

Charlie calms down almost immediately.

CHARLIE

Got a minute?

LUCY looks around and then smiles.

LUCY

Sure, I need a break. Come out back and talk to me, Charlie.

Charlie follows her outside behind the bookstore.  Lucy lights a cigarette and gives Charlie a critical look.

LUCY

I didn't think you lived near here. Did you take a bus?

She exhales and Charlie giggles.

CHARLIE

The dragon belches fire. Hee hee. Dragon breath.

Charlie gets serious again.

CHARLIE (CONT.)

I walked.

He turns away nervously.  He now speaks weakly.

CHARLIE (CONT.)

I'm scared.

LUCY

Scared? Scared of what?

CHARLIE

I don't know.  That's why I see you.  I don't know. I want an answer!

LUCY

Think hard. You have the answer inside you.

CHARLIE

Easy out for Lucy. Always putting it back on me like she doesn't know.  Or maybe she won't tell me. Hiding the answers from me. Can't you tell me? Just this once, tell me. I'm always so afraid, but I don't know why. Please, you've got to tell me why.

Lucy sighs and puts out her cigarette.

LUCY

My break's over.

Lucy returns inside and Charlie follows.

CHARLIE

But I need to talk now.

Lucy turns on Charlie and he stops and jumps back. Lucy almost hisses as she speaks.

LUCY

Go away or I'll call security.

LUCY goes back to her book signing.  Charlie watches from a distance.

CHARLIE

Jar of Nickels?  What does that mean?  I'm not buying the book. No way...  Oh, my God! I have a jar of nickels. I keep jars. One jar has quarters, one jar has dimes, another...  Aaaah! She is stealing my life, draining me for her little books.

Charlie watches her with a look of pure hate in his eyes.
