EXT. VILLAGE ROAD. DAY.
A nice SUV drives toward a small town near the mountains. A mining operation can be seen at the edge of town, but there is no activity at the mine. The SUV pulls into street lined with old abandoned houses with trailers mixed in. The newness of the SUV is a stark contrast to the town which has homes with boarded up windows and rusty junk piled in the yards.
I/E SUV. DAY.
Four reporters are packed in the car with their camera equipment. REBECCA is the leader of the group and drives. TALLY sits up in front by REBECCA and reads notes on her clipboard while listening to her ipod. REGAN is in the back looking out the window through his sunglasses but he could be asleep for all they know. He's bored with the long drive and finds the company equally boring. DONNY is the young, inexperienced one of the group and is already recording with his handcam out the window.
View changes to Donny's camera.
REBECCA
That's going to be really crappy footage, Donny.
DONNY (O.C.)
I'm doing the behind the scenes work on our documentary. The DVD extras are the way to go now days. No one watches the actual documentary anymore.
Donny's camera turns to Tally who gives some attitude for Donny's video. She's always the actress.
TALLY
Where'd you learn that? Community college film school?
DONNY (O.C.)
I learned it from the school of life, baby.
TALLY
Where'd you dig him up, Rebecca?
REBECCA
I got a grant that paid for the documentary if I brought along some local film students.
DONNY (O.C.)
And I was the best of the best.
REBECCA
They had a drawing to see who got to go.
DONNY (O.C.)
And the best man won.
TALLY
Well, at least there's only one of them. A few more and I'd be having flashbacks to those elementary school field trips.
Donny's camera turns to Regan.
DONNY (O.C.)
You think he's sleeping?
REGAN
Get that out of my face, maggot.
DONNY (O.C.)
I think that's a no.
Regan sits up and looks around for a place to stop.
REGAN
I gotta pee.
Donny's camera turns to the front.
TALLY
So do I.
REBECCA
I don't see anywhere to stop unless you want to knock on someone's door.
Donny's camera zooms out the front window of the SUV to an abandoned looking building, maybe an old school. A MAN is standing in the shadows at the corner.
DONNY (O.C.)
There's someone. Let's ask him.
REBECCA
Couldn't we pick someone a little less... shady?
TALLY
He's the first person I've seen in this town.
EXT. OLD SCHOOL. DAY.
The SUV pulls up to the school. The man steps around the corner out of sight. TALLY steps out of the car annoyed. REGAN comes out beside her.
TALLY
Where'd he go?
Donny and Rebecca step out now and they all come together at the front of the SUV. They take in the creepy atmosphere. The school is boarded up and the yard is overgrown.
REGAN
I'm going to pee in the bushes.
TALLY
Guys have it so easy.
REGAN
I'll look for a hollowed out stump for you.
TALLY
Always the gentleman.
Regan wanders off away from the man now wanting to encounter the strange person on his pee break. Donny smiles at Tally and points to his camera and then Regan. Donny follows. Tally rolls her eyes.
TALLY
If we're lucky, Regan will kill him today and the rest of the documentary will be maggot free.
Rebecca isn't paying attention to the drama going on with the others. She is focused on the corner where the man disappeared.
REBECCA
Get your camera.
TALLY
Let the documentary begin.
Rebecca heads for the corner of the building. Tally runs and gets her camera.
EXT. BUSHES NEAR SCHOOL. DAY.
We're back to Donny's handcam view. He's going through the bushes toward Regan is is looking for a bush. Donny does his best crocodile hunter impression.
DONNY (O.C.)
Here we are hunting the rare albino pygmy snake as it looks for a place to release it's venom.
Donny loses sight of Regan. He stops and pans his camera back and forth. Donny hears something behind him and spins. Close up on Regan.
REGAN
Maggot!
DONNY (O.C.)
Crikey!
Camera flails around as Regan pushes Donny to the ground. Donny points the camera up at Regan.
REGAN
Follow me again, maggot, and I'll take that camera on a journey to your prostate.
Regan walks away and Donny follows him with his camera.
DONNY (O.C.)
That could be interesting. I'll need a different lens though.
EXT. BEHIND SCHOOL. DAY.
We switch to Tally's camera which is much higher quality than Donny's and much steadier. Tally is following Rebecca.
TALLY (O.C.)
Where'd he go?
REBECCA
I don't know.
Rebecca tries a door but it's locked.
TALLY (O.C.)
He didn't go that way.
A voice comes from behind Tally.
MAN (O.C.)
They're dead now.
Tally lets out a little yelp and turns. It's the man they say from the SUV. He is Native American and very sad looking. Rebecca goes up to him.
REBECCA
Who's dead?
MAN
The children. They're all dead now.
REBECCA
The children in the school.
MAN
All our children.
The man points to the homes across the street and walks toward the corner of the building.
REBECCA
What happened to them?
Rebecca follows him to the corner. She steps around and freezes.
TALLY (O.C.)
What is it?
Tally's camera comes around the corner behind Rebecca. The man is nowhere to be seen. Camera view changes to see both Rebecca and Tally standing in confusion. Tally lowers her camera.
REBECCA
He's gone.
TALLY
What is going on here?
EXT. BUSHES OUTSIDE SCHOOL. DAY.
Donny's handcam is taking some chickens in the school yard. Regan calls out.
REGAN
Donny! Over here.
Donny's handcam points over to bushes where Regan has been taking a leak. Regan waves him over and then zips up his fly.
DONNY (O.C.)
What is it? Did you write your initials? I love to do that.
REGAN
Look.
Donny's handcam goes from Regan down to trench. Inside are small skeletons. Probably of children. Donny screams like a girl and drops his camera.
EXT. OLD SCHOOL. DAY
Rebecca and Tally hear Donny's scream.
REBECCA
Turn on your camera. Let's go.
Camera changes to Tally's. She follows REBECCA.
EXT. BUSHES OUTSIDE SCHOOL. DAY.
Rebecca runs up to Donny and Regan who are looking in a trench. Tally is right behind her. Rebecca runs up beside guys and looks down.
TALLY (O.C.)
What is it?
Tally gets up to trench and points camera down. We get a much better view of the skeletons.
MAN (O.C.)
Mother is angry.
Donny screams again and Tally's camera goes up to man who is standing on the other side of the trench. Tally backs up a step but Rebecca steps forward to the edge of the trench to get closer to the man.
REBECCA
Who are you? Who are these children?
MAN
Your answers are below the surface. Where their fathers had gone... unleashing the spirits that consumed them.
Tally gets a shot of the skeletons and they now have blood on them.
TALLY (O.C.)
Holy hell...
Tally steps back and we see Donny and Regan looking down. Donny is terrified.
DONNY
Is that blood?
REGAN
Where did that come from?
REBECCA
Where'd he go?
Tally lifts her camera and the man is gone again.
DONNY
Let's get out of here.
Camera view now sees all four of them. Tally has lowered her camera. Donny is on his way back to the SUV. Regan and Rebecca have kneeled down to look at the skeletons.
REBECCA
How in the world did that happen?
Regan picks up a leg bone with blood on it.
REGAN
Weird.
TALLY
Don't touch that.
REGAN
You scared, Tally?
TALLY
A little.
REGAN
Why don't you and Donny go hide in the car then?
Donny pokes his head around corner of school.
DONNY
I'm not hiding. I'm reconnoitering.
TALLY
Look, we came here to do a documentary on the mining accidents, not investigate spooks and mass graves... I don't do ghosts and no amount of Scooby snacks are going to change that.
DONNY
Mmmm. Scooby snacks. I'm hungry.
REGAN
Here's a bone to chew on for later.
Regan tosses the bone to Donny who jumps out of the way. The bone lands near Donny's feet. The camera immediate goes below the surface into the ground and a loud thud is heard from the bone hitting the ground. The thud echoes as the camera goes into mining tunnels. The camera flies through the tunnels as the echo grows louder and louder. The mining tunnels change to rough caves and the echo grows until it reaches a dark cave. The camera stops very suddenly. The echo bounces in the cave and dies. A moment of silence.
SFX. A might roar of a creature is heard so powerful is rocks the caves and rocks fall. The roar echoes through the tunnels of the cave and mine.
The camera flies up and stops suddenly on Donny's eyes.
DONNY
What was that?
OPENING TITLE: VENGEFUL SPIRITS
